"Winter Memories II"
Soft Pastel ~ 11"" x 15"
This is the second in a series of paintings of the lagoon at Northside Park in Wheaton, Illinois. I painted this in pastel. Since the old stone bridge is no longer there, this one came not from photos, but from my memories of childhood. I used it for my Christmas cards in 2004, and below is the story that went on the back of the card.

“Winter Memories II” the Bridge at the Lagoon ~ Wheaton, Illinois
This is the second in a series of paintings of the Lagoon in Wheaton, Illinois. “Only” two miles or so from our house, we used to walk there to go ice skating when we were children. The old stone bridge is a vivid memory in my mind. If the ice was good, you could skate under the bridge and around the island (on the left). As a teenager, you might even hold mittened hands with a beau for that romantic skate around the island, and perhaps steal a quick kiss under the bridge (it was far too cold for anything but the briefest little peck!)
Children still skate on the lagoon, but the stone bridge has been replaced with a wooden one.
It just looks sort of wrong there, so, whenever I think of winter, and snow, and ice skating,
I will remember the old stone bridge… as it was, and as it should be.
