"Winter Memories I"
Watercolor ~ 11" x 15"
I painted this in watercolor from a photo I had taken on a trip back to the town of my childhood. I used it for my Christmas cards in 2003, and below (please scroll down) is the story that went on the back of the card. (I also had cocoa mugs made as gifts complete with the painting and the story!)

“Winter Memories I”
the Warming House at the Lagoon
Wheaton, Illinois
“Only” a two mile or so walk from our house, this is where we used to go ice skating when we were children. The warming house had a huge stone fireplace (at least it seemed huge at the time) and long wooden benches to sit on . . . to change into your skates or sip hot cocoa. It was the perfect place to warm yourself after skating for hours in the cold and wind of a blustery winter day in Northern Illinois. Cold noses and toes were barely noticed as we’d glide across the ice with hearts as light as snowflakes. Then we’d crunch through the snow up to the warming house for that steaming cup of cocoa, the warmth and crackle of the fire, and the laughter shared with siblings and friends.
It’s been about forty years since I last skated there, but the warming house still stands and children still skate on the lagoon. I hope they are enjoying every moment and are building warm, happy and lasting “Winter Memories“ of their own.
